An Introduction

Dear Fellow Encinitan,

My name is Julie Thunder and I’m running for Mayor of Encinitas in the November election. I’d like to introduce myself, and hopefully start a conversation with you….

Keep Encinitas a BEACH town, not a BIG town.

Encinitas can once again be a place where
citizens feel respected and heard,
where politics is less divisive and more transparent,
and where growth is attained in thoughtful, measured ways.”

I am not a politician. I have no interest in using the mayorship as a stepping stone to higher office. But as a 35-year resident of Encinitas, I’ve been paying attention for a long time.

And lately, I don’t like what I see…
• A Mayor who has sided again and again with big-money, out-of-town developers to force in oversized and overpriced housing.
• A Mayor who sues residents in an effort to reverse and silence our legal voting rights.
• A Mayor who spent your tax dollars to build unnecessary and dangerous road obstacles on Coast Highway, that have resulted in multiple road injuries in just the last few weeks.
• A Mayor who has recklessly pursued policies leading to a record number of lawsuits by citizens who feel unheard and unrepresented.
• A Mayor who has ignored maintenance of critical infrastructure like our storm systems, leading to flooding of homes and pollution of our wetlands and beaches.
• A Mayor who routinely cancels City Council meetings, silencing your right to be heard.

“I believe in slow growth with good planning.
Not forced growth with no planning.”

Values I will bring to City Hall:
 I represent and am one of you, a long-time Encinitas Local. As a registered Independent (NPP), I have no allegiance to any political party or state bureaucrats
I am deeply empathetic to homeowners and their desire to raise families and live in a city with small-town values;
I believe that land-use decisions should be made by our city, not Sacramento, and I’m ready to stand up and fight for that!
I will pay particular attention to residents when a project will impact them and their quality of life; The only special interests I am beholden to are the residents of Encinitas;
I will maintain regular City Council meeting schedules, bring transparency to local government, and increase two-way communication between citizens and government.
I will bring and encourage diversity in thought to City Hall. I believe our Council should fully explore issues that impact our citizens, and that our City Staff should be held to high standards.
I believe that there is no free money. All city income, including state and federal grants, originate from taxpayer dollars and come with strings. They should be spent wisely and in full view of citizens, and we should consider what obligations we accept if we take outside money.

Introduction to Julie Thunder
35 years ago my husband and I chose Encinitas as our forever home.  We’ve made sacrifices to live here and raise our family here.  But it’s worth it to us because Encinitas is a special place filled with special people.
