Cardiff School: What I would have done

CARDIFF SCHOOL DISTRICT
Dear Cardiff taxpayers,

My name is Julie Thunder. Each of my four daughters attended Cardiff and Ada Harris schools and I’m thankful for the lessons they learned from the wonderful teachers and staff.

But I’m worried about today’s Cardiff kids. It’s bad enough they’re experiencing a pandemic and massive disruptions to their young lives, but now they’ve been exposed to the toxic reality of lawsuits, nastiness amongst our neighbors, and city officials who’ve forgotten the citizens they serve.

It was shocking and disappointing to watch our own community members sue our District, not once, but TWICE!

These lawsuits are costing our schools over $4 million. That’s taxpayer money that was earmarked for our children, but is now being wasted by community members who doubled down by bringing the second lawsuit forward.

If I were your mayor two years ago… knowing that it was actually the City that had applied for the grant that’s currently impacting the District,

I would have…
  • Supported the District’s simple request for assistance in altering the boundaries of the decades-old and long-forgotten joint agreement with the City and the Parks Service;
  • Never advised fellow council members on the issue beforehand;
  • Not supported family members seeking legal action against the District;
  • Discouraged others from opposing the school project and tried to calm the waters, instead of fanning the flames of hostility.
That’s what leaders do.

Going forward, we have an opportunity to correct the path for our school district, our Cardiff community, and for the entire City of Encinitas by changing our leadership. I’m here to offer that change by running for Mayor and I hope to earn your vote.

I’m proudly endorsed by
  • Cardiff District Trustees David Ross and Siena Randall;
  • Cardiff Elementary School Principal Julie Parker;
  • Ada Harris teacher and former President of the Cardiff Teachers Association Trish d’Entremont;
  • Deputy Sheriffs’ Association of San Diego; and
  • Many past and present community leaders, listed here.

I’m a mother who wants the same safe and friendly small-town experience for your children that mine had.  And, I’m ready to fight for it.

I would be honored to serve as your mayor.

Sincerely,
Julie Thunder
