STATE BLASTS ENCINITAS HOUSING PLAN
HCD letter to City of Encinitas
The state Department of Housing and Community Development is blasting the affordable housing plan advanced by the mayor and city council. In an Aug. 27 letter, HCD warns Encinitas to assume “realistic capacity” on sites set aside for low-income units.  As presented, the numbers fall way short.

The mayor and city council – and the developers who support them – are determined to crush our voter-approved Prop A Right to Vote initiative on zoning. The HCD letter confirms that unrealistic projections are to blame for deficient affordable housing, and not Prop A.

For new developments, my opponent and her colleagues require a 15 percent set-aside for affordable housing. At that percentage, we would need to identify 5,587 new housing units to yield the state-mandated, 838 affordable units.

If the mayor and council were to increase the set-aside to 25 percent, an idea that developers dislike, it would take only 3,352 total units to yield the affordable numbers required by the state.
Encinitas needs to reclaim control of its zoning from a mayor and city council who envision super-sized projects that enrich developers, destroy neighborhoods, and ignores the will of residents.

Jam-packed housing won’t solve our problems. Working with residents will.

MONEY MATTERS
If you are ready for change, I need your help. In Encinitas, $250 is the maximum donation allowed per person. If you have donated already, THANK YOU!  If you can give more, it will be put to good use. Every dollar given will help keep Encinitas a beach town, not a big town.

Introduction to Julie Thunder
(The Thunder family in 1994)
Thirty-five years ago, my husband and I chose Encinitas as our forever home. We made sacrifices to live here and raise our four daughters here. But it’s worth it to us because Encinitas is a special place filled with amazing people.
My husband isn’t the only boy in the house!
